Nursing Workforce Shortage

The LA Health Collaborative is working to address L.A. County’s nursing workforce shortage, such as creating a regional master plan. Research shows that nursing improves the quality of care. However, California will need 116,000 new nurses by 2020. In 2004, California ranked 50th in the nation with a ratio of 590 nurses per 100,000 population. A nursing regional report evaluated nursing sufficiency, assigning the L.A. County area a grade of C-. Of the multiple barriers, the major challenge faced is the lack of educational capacity, with nearly half of nursing applicants in L.A. turned away due to lack of space in 2005.
