Coverage Initiative

A requirement of the hospital financing waiver is the development of an initiative to expand coverage for uninsured individuals. There is $180 million in federal matching funds available for this initiative annually for the last three years of the waiver. L.A. County Department of Health Services received $54 million annually for three years for its Healthy Way LA (HWLA) program, which aims to shift patients with chronic illnesses to continuity care while enhancing quality of care. Starting in September 2007, HWLA will target providing coverage to an estimated 94,000 low-income, uninsured individuals with services available through the county's multi-service ambulatory care center (MACC), comprehensive health centers and health centers as well as the 80 PPP community clinic sites.
