Martin Luther King, Jr.-Harbor Hospital

In August 2007, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released its negative decision on the “make-or-break” survey of King-Harbor Hospital. Earlier, the State announced its intention to revoke the hospital’s license. Due to the finding of not meeting Medicare conditions of participation, the hospital lost $200 million in federal support, which resulted in the closure of its emergency room and inpatient services. Given the alarming socio-economic and health disparities confronting the South L.A. community combined with the broken health system, primary care, public health and mental health should be integrated to create a population-based, chronic-disease focused model of health care delivery in order to create real and meaningful change.
