Hospitals

The number of L.A. County public and private hospitals has steadily declined since 1995. In addition, the total number of beds has decreased while occupancy rates and annual admissions have increased. These factors have resulted in a ratio of beds to population lower than the national average. The geographic areas with the greatest threat of limited access are South L.A. and Southeast L.A., with the worst ratio of discharges to beds. The situation in Southeast L.A. is particularly uncertain because of the trauma center closure at the L.A. County King/Drew Medical Center in 2004 and pending decisions regarding the hospital’s future configuration.
