Vulnerable Populations and Health Disparities
Alarming health disparities exist in certain areas of L.A. County, especially for SPA 6 (South L.A.) residents. This community is confronted by the most difficult realities, such as the highest rates of uninsured children, teen births, obesity, high blood pressure and mortality from cancer, stroke, diabetes and coronary heart disease. South L.A. has limited access to health care services as demonstrated by the largest need for additional beds and emergency department treatment stations, worst densities of available specialty physicians, worst ratios of discharges to available bed and worst wait times for emergency room visits.
