Health Professionals
L.A. County is experiencing shortages of health professionals. With California encountering one of the worst nursing shortages, the state will have almost half of the nurses needed by 2020. The new state mandated increases in nurse-patient staffing ratios complicate matters, as it is difficult for L.A. County Department of Health Services (DHS) hospitals to remain competitive in the midst of salary and employee benefits rate pressures. With respect to physicians, the county has at least 30 federally designated shortage areas for primary care, in spite of its large workforce.
